Thuya wood

A rectangular flat-lidded box cut from a thuya burl. The centre is left smooth to show the speckled figure; groups of incised grooves frame the edges and cross at the corners, and the sides are channelled the same way. Two sizes. Hand-polished varnished wood: the pattern of the burl changes from one box to the next.

A secret box carved from a thuya burl: no visible hinge or clasp, only panels and slats that slide. They have to be moved in the right order to release the lid and reveal the compartment inside. The top and edges are cut from a densely figured burl, the sides from straight-grained pale wood. Hand-polished waxed wood: the figuring differs from one box to the next.

An apple turned from a thuya burl, set on the table to hold toothpicks. Lift it by the stalk — a piece of rough burl, left coarse against the polished fruit — and the top comes away: the toothpicks stand waiting in a hollow cut into the solid wood. The rings and flames of the grain draw the cheek of the apple — no two are alike.

A chessboard that doubles as the lid of a wooden case: squares of dark figured thuya alternate with pale wood, inside a moulded, rounded-edge frame. A drawer slides out of the side of the base and holds the complete set, turned light and dark pieces included. Game over, everything goes back in and the case becomes an object to display. Kohl bottle (mkahla) cut from a block of thuya, trapezoidal so it stands flat, with a short neck and a twisted turned-wood applicator that stows inside. Two finishes: plain, showing off the speckling of the burl, or decorated with crescents and inlaid brass motifs. A traditional object, also used as a small storage bottle.

Long thuya case with a sliding lid that comes away sideways in one movement. It holds three dice cut from the same wood, their pips marked with fine brass pins. With the case closed, the flamed figure of the lid runs on across the body.

Prayer beads (sebha) strung on a black cord, made of thuya beads turned and polished one by one, a deep russet brown with clearly visible veining. Turned cylindrical head, finished with three beads on knotted cords. Every bead has its own figure: the grain never repeats.
