A chessboard that folds into a case: open, it lays out squares of dark thuya burl and pale wood; closed, it forms a rectangular box held by a shell-shaped chased brass clasp. The sides are plain thuya framed in burl, the lid set on hinges. The turned light and dark pieces stow inside and travel with the board. Hand-polished varnished wood: the figuring differs from one piece to the next.

A secret box carved from a thuya burl: no visible hinge or clasp, only panels and slats that slide. They have to be moved in the right order to release the lid and reveal the compartment inside. The top and edges are cut from a densely figured burl, the sides from straight-grained pale wood. Hand-polished waxed wood: the figuring differs from one box to the next.
A box turned from a thuya burl, swelling into a pebble shape and polished to a shine. A flowering branch runs right around the body, drawn in pale filet and set with dark red and green inlay: the figure of the wood passes under the pattern without a break. The flat lid, ringed with the same decoration, lifts by a turned knob. A decorative piece to display.
An apple turned from a thuya burl, set on the table to hold toothpicks. Lift it by the stalk — a piece of rough burl, left coarse against the polished fruit — and the top comes away: the toothpicks stand waiting in a hollow cut into the solid wood. The rings and flames of the grain draw the cheek of the apple — no two are alike.
